Things don't have to be big to be significant. They can be rare.
Last year, Bret Martel of the Associated Press reported "the Holy Grail of Birding" -- the sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker. This was a rare event, so rare that many birders believe the sighting was bogus. They think the bird is extinct, dead as a dodo.
Me, I can tell a hawk from a handsaw, but can't tell one woodpecker from another. Perhaps I've seen dozens of ivory-billed woodpeckers. How would I know? Perhaps I've seen other equally rare creatures or events. Perhaps I've talked for hours with celebrities. I wouldn't know. Significance is lost on the ignorant.
